The 6 Coolest And Most Bizarre Things Discovered In Space

Movies about space pretty much always end in disaster or someone getting eaten by a massive ugly alien. Although scientists are no closer to finding out whether there is other life forms out there in the galaxy, they have discovered some other cool shit.

Unfathomable to the normal human mind, space is literally bursting with possibilities, which is why these bizarre discoveries are really the tip of the iceberg.

Here are 6 of the coolest things that we’ve discovered in all our years looking up at the stars.

1. God’s liquor cabinet (let me explain)

This might get people more interested in going to space, there is alcohol up there. Sagittarius B2, which is a giant cloud a few million times bigger than the sun, contains about 10 billion billion billion litres of alcohol. Containing a chemical which is believed to smell like rum, it’s the same chemical that gives cherries their flavour. It’s basically a river of cherry rum. PERFECT. Also with alcohol being an organic compound, it could give scientists an idea how life is formed in space.

2. A giant magnifying glass

Gravity does some strange stuff up in space, even bending light. This means that objects that astronomers are looking at may be far away from where they appear to be. Scientists call this gravitational lessening, cool eh?

3. Unicorns and other crazy stuff

Believe it or not, this is not something out of a morning cartoon for kids; this is a Trifid Nebula, a giant gas cloud that happens to look exactly like a sparkly space unicorn. You can clearly make out the shape from the picture. This is just a small example of pareidolia (the sciency term for our tendency to see patterns in random smudges, like Jesus in a piece of toast, or a unicorn in a gas cloud).

4. A supermassive black hole sent screaming through space by a giant galactic slingshot

Yes, it is what Muse were singing about, the supermassive black hole. But this is no ordinary black hole, oh on. This is the CID-42 system, where scientists have seen two galaxies team up to slingshot a giant black hole right out into space at a totally impossible speed.

5. An actual shooting star

So when you see that bright thing fly across the sky, you’re actually seeing a meteorite, which is way less impressive than an actual shooting star. A star is of course WAY bigger and when it “shoots”, shit kicks off in a very real way. A proper shooting star is one like Mira, a giant red star at the end of her life. Rather than die quietly like most stars would, Mira is hurtling through the galaxy at an incredible 291,000 miles per hour, with a trunk full of mescaline and nothing to lose. Shedding stuff on its way that will help create new stars, Mira knows how to go out in style. You go girl.

6. A massive mystery force beyond our universe

Just when you think nothing scary can be found out in space, the scientists outdo themselves. Apparently there is something unthinkably massive just beyond the visible borders of our universe. While we can’t see it, we know it’s there because it drags parts of the universe into it like water swirling into a drain. Scary right? As you can see in the diagram, something is pulling the coloured clusters away from our universe. Known as dark flow, some astronomers think that it might be some unknown, exotic megastructure cast off in the first moments of the Big Bang. Whatever it is, it’s a pretty frightening thought.

So space is actually pretty cool, but definitely very frightening. The more I think about it, the more the sheer scale of it makes me feel very very very uneasy. But if they have gas clouds that look like unicorns, it can’t be that bad… It also turns out that NASA have recorded sound in space, and the result is pretty mind-blowing.
