Couple Quit Jobs, Sell Everything, Buy A Boat And Sail The World With Their Cat Georgie

While the rest of us are plugging away at our 9-to-5 (I wish) jobs, adventurous couple Matt and Jemma Johnson have shown the two fingers to conventional living by quitting their jobs, selling all of their material belongings and sailing around the world with their cat Georgie.

The pair, both 32, had never even set foot on a sailing boat before now so not only did they take a bold move that few of us would dare, they were also sailing into completely unknown territory. They did buy the boat back in 2008 and practiced for a few years and eventually hit the seas in 2011 – so far they’ve seen 16 different countries.

They weren’t satisfied with just the two of them on this trip though and they recruited their furry friend Georgie whom they adopted from a no-kill shelter in 2012 – who has now seen 13 countries and even dabbled in a bit of kitty-dipping in the waters of the world. Though, the couple ensure she is kept safe from the waters when sailing by keeping her below deck, with a harness and leash for safety.

From the lusciously clear waters of the Caribbean to the bursting-with-culture South America, the loved-up explorers have seen some of the most beautiful sights the world has to offer.

Previously, the both had successful careers, Matt as a sales manager at a car dealership and Jessica, a billing specialist for an auto insurance company – but you just compare those two jobs to the life they’re living now and it’s easy to see why they jumped ship.

The money made from selling their house, cars and personal items has been enough to fund the trip and they’re still living off them now – albeit frugally, spending around 700 a month on diesel, docking fees, insurance, food shopping, eating out, entertainment and general living costs. It goes to show material items aren’t always the way to keep people happy.

When I think about sailing around the world with a partner and being with them 24/7 it does make me wonder if I’d end up throwing them overboard but this couple say it has made their ten-year relationship stronger than ever before.

They’ve faced some challenges upon their travels, as you’d expect, including storms and winds of up to 55 knots. At one point the seas became so rough, they were just about ready to abandon ship and find safety from their life raft but they made it through.

What a great inspiration for the rest of us to not settle in the monotony of our day to day routines and strive for something a little more thrilling and adventurous.
