6 Highly Controversial Parenting Punishments That You Couldn’t Get Away With Today

In a society where telling a child to sit on the naughty step for poor behaviour has become a prerequisite of good discipline. It’s hard to believe that the days of belt lashings and the cane were not so distant disciplinary devices.

Have parents become too soft? I remember the days when the thought of a back hander across my backside for dropping the F word made me quake in my boots.

There are some everyday punishments of days gone by that I’m sure we are all happy to see the back of. However, the last few decades have blessed us with some cracking parenting techniques that you would probably never see in 2015. Can you relate to any of these?

1. I’m going to wash your mouth out with soap

Putting 20p in the swear jar will surely never be as effective as eating a bar of soap to wash out that dirty mouth.

2. Rap on the knuckles

Back in the day rulers were used for a wallop on the hands for whispering class. Now they seem to be used for their actual purpose – measuring, how boring.

3. Caught smoking, eat it!

We all know that smoking kills. Yet smoking is still rife amongst the younger generation with new kids picking up the habit every day. Stories of children being forced to eat fags after being caught by their parents would surely make anyone reassess their life choice.

4. Smoke 1, smoke them all.

Whilst we are on the fagwagon. A controversial tool that parents had in their box when catching their boys and girls smoking, would be to force them to smoke the whole pack. A controversial technique that could swing one of two ways; deter them from ever smoking again, or push them to become a chain smoker for the rest of their days. The risky business that is parenting.

5. Dinner for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We all know that the majority of children have major issues when it comes to eating their veggies and greens. Today it is common to make your child remain at the table until they’ve finished every last pea. However, back in the day, things were a bit more extreme for some little boys and girls. Take my mum for example, if she didn’t finish her dinner, she’d be having it for breakfast, lunch and dinner the following day until it was gone. No cheerios for you mum, a nice handful of brussels sprout and cauliflower will do nicely, yummy.

6. The smack

The dreaded smack, a controversial term that if used in a public place nowadays will guarantee you getting an eyeballing so severe you might as well have shouted “bomb!” The hand, the slipper, we’ve all been there. I say all hail the smack!

The days of proper discipline are over. In it’s place a count to three and a stern word. No one is being taught the ethics of right and wrong, well they are, but are the techniques being used as effective? Is being sent to your room with a comfy bed and probably a chocolate bar stuffed below your pillow going to stop you from punching your sibling again? Probably not.

It is clear parenting techniques have changed. It is subjective whether this change has been for the better or worse for society. Outside the household here are some reasons why the world has changed for the worse.
